Steampunk Goddess Necklace
By Joan Kettell
Steampunk Goddess Necklace! There is something so extraordinary about Steampunk and its many properties. It can have a timeless Neo-Victorian look, a bit of Apothecary Flare, A Horologist Essence, A Sci-Fi Twist, some Jules Verne Influence, Cosplay/Lolita Fun, Circus Oddity, Industrial Chic, Recycled Splendor, Wild West Mechanics, Alchemist Mystery, the Magic of Astronomy and Space, a Celestial Ride into the world of Moon-ology and you got Steampunk.

With this many options, who wouldn't want to start creating works revolving around this eclectic range of themes under one main roof. You can mix time gears, dials, industrial washers, and charms, viola you have a steampunk piece. Think of tiny bottles wrapped in wire for a necklace charm, hardware store washers embedded with stamped numbers, clock parts and casings filled with tiny eclectic scenes, top hats that are tricked out, boats and balloon travel, there are just so many places you can travel to within the realm of Steampunk.

The piece I am showing casing for you today is made by one of the greatest woman I know, my mom, Joan Kettell aka Aurora-tique who got infect by the Steampunk bug over 3 years ago, since then Joan has made over 2,000 pieces and has sold to customers world wide, taught some classes, been interviewed from various papers and media outlets all in an attempt to help spread the word on this fascinating subject.

Here are some more photos of her newest piece: Steampunk Goddess Necklace, which is now available for sale in the online store:

Auroratique's Steampunk Jewelry!
Mom's Newest Jewelry! 9
My Mom Joan has always enjoyed designing jewelry. About 3 years ago after a girls day out at my friend Terri's house, a group of us were hosted to a day of jewelry making and fun, with renewed interest, my Mother started re-creating her jewelry again in what I call hyper speed, prior to, she'd create a piece every so often, now its 3 to 5 times a day.

Her collection has grown to over 1,000 pieces, many she has sold at Art Events/Shows, Trunk Shows, Private Sales, at Piddlestixs and online. Our store: Piddlestixs located in Historic Lafayette, NJ has proven to be her star base, over the past 6 months, we have seen a variety of industry professionals walk through our doors from the city (NYC) and have purchased her wares. She has been published and has taught workshops over the past year, which has lead her on a new theme, Steampunk which she mixes with Victorian and Gothic tones.

Since last January, my Mother has been building her Steampunk line of wares from necklaces o earrings, bracelets and now rings, cuffs and hair bands. The obsession with keys, time pieces and vintage apothecary has fueled her passion. Each steampunk piece can sometime take days to complete due to the complexity or design, the parts and the fusing of the metals.Mom's Newest Jewelry! 6Mom's Newest Jewelry!
Currently she is working on incorporating some more bling, mythology and folklore themes into her new pieces. All the components which make up her jewelry are a mix of antique, vintage, modern or handmade.

Here is a sampling of my Mother's Steampunk Line. You can find her under: Auroratique on Etsy and throughout the web. If you are in town come visit her and her works at Piddlestixs!

Art Is You, The Next Post in Wonderland!
After a wonderful night out, we were all exhausted and headed for bed. Terri, Mom and I all shared a room, and we get along great, which made for a wonderful sleep. In the morning, we all headed for breakfast to meet Pam, Billie and Janet for our fabulous buffet breakfast, I stuck to the scrambled eggs and fruit.Janet, Billy and Joan: Art is You!
During breakfast I finally was able to meet Beverly, we had been playing phone and email tag for weeks, she is incredible and lives in South Jersey, not to far from me, we are meeting up again in a few weeks.fairy joyFairy Joy Set up: Art is You!me and the queens gownOnce breakfast was finished Pam had to get down to her class room to teach and the other girls were off to classes or to their vending booths, I on the other hand was off to set up my display and booksMy books at Art is You! 3 for my book signing, under the grand gazebo, Now I was really going to feel like the Queen of Hearts or Queen Alice, I'll appoint my mom the other Queen, lol! Plus she was going to set up a preview of her new jewelry she had been working on the past few months. http://auroratique.blogspot.com/
Me and Mom! 2!Joan's Booth aka Auroratique! 2Mom's JewelryJoan's Booth aka Auroratique! Mom's Jewelry 2I choose to keep in the Queen of Hearts colors w/pinks, reds, golds, silvers, etc., to compliment my artwork on display and my books. This year I'm getting more and more into a creamy, yet bright candyland color palette I have often referred to as Cupcake Chic, which is a name I have given to this color mix and style that I have been working in. Its a mix of storybook vintage, 50's pastel and modern bright, and everything sugary and sweet in between, LOL!My Dress Form: Art is You!My 2nd Dress Form: Art is You!I dressed the dress forms in pinks and creamy magenta's. They material I used was lightweight pale pink vinyl table ruffles and lightweight vinyl creamy magenta party table cloths, when mixed w/glitter, beautiful ribbons, jewels, and tulle, you can get some wonderful and enchanting results. I headed to the dollar store for the table cloths and ruffles, cost me under $5 for 2 sets each w/tax, alot less expensive then yards of fabric, tulle or crinilon. Once you dress it up it looks like beautiful and you can recycle the vinyl cloths later on for another dress form, for a table cloth, apron, funky curtain, fabric books, etc.kecia me and keithKecia, Me and Keith

Now I was set up for all to see and buy, the books were ready to be wisked away and that they were, before and after the luncheon I was greeted by friends and made new ones sharing stories and projects they made or want to make from the book. Hearing their joy filled me with so much magic which is amazing.under the queens tentfriends of art is youArt Is You: Me and Betti!Art Is You: My Book Signing! 3Art Is You: My Book Signing! 5During the luncheon Sallianne and Ellen displayed a beautiful memory photo slide show, mentioned the event, the instructors and introduced me, I turned red and pink, lol! At our table we shared wonderful stories and ideas. Once dessert hit, everyone ate and headed again to their classes or vendor booths, it was an Enormous Mad Tea Party w/amazing guests, now it was off to visit the wonderland guests heading to the booth.
friends under the queens tentMy mom held the fort, lol, her own stories, personal experiences and making new friends, many at the event remarked on her artful wares and purchased some to wear, Sallianne's Mom and My Mom became instant friends, I think when my mom goes to Australia, she might stay for a long time, lol, its one of her dreams to visit there, she especially loves the accents too, lol.

But it gets even better, so I walk down to Pam's classroom w/Cyndi to visit Me, Pam, Cyndi: Art is You!and what does Pam do, but surprise me with a gift, yep, a gift in the coolest box w/a vintage crepe paper doll/ornament and vintage glitter houses, yep, I almost fainted, amazing.

The Jeweled Dress Form and Art Upcycled Treasures!
The Jeweled Dress Form!I've been making alot of jewelry lately, I had a recent trunk show of my jewelry and handmade dress forms, it was so much fun, to get my mind channeling into another direction, back to my jewelry roots, all while recycling what I had and using up vintage and new pieces. The Jeweled Dress Form! 2I love dress forms, they are the perfect accompaniment to any artist studio for showcasing your fave treasures on or to display them at an event or art show. I have always wanted to pick up a dress form, but never got around to it, the old ones are expensive and harder to find, the new ones, well they aren't timeless, but with a bit of distressing they can achieve that worn look

Display IDEAS:

-But what about making your own? All you need is a thick wooden dowel or porch post, some scrap wood, batting and fabric. For smaller ones, a wire base with legs or a bird cage or standing plant stand will work, and again, batting and fabric.

-You don't need a dress form to display your treasures, what about covering a corkboard w/fabric and painting the wood frame antique gold or a fun pink, robin's egg blue or chalky white.

-A Garden Wire Rack or floral ornament will work as great displays, closet shutter doors, wooden window shutters, or 3 door screens are all great displays.

Try buying 3 door sized pieces of wood, cover both sides with upholstery batting, staple gunning to wood. Cover with fabric of choice, trim sides with molding, trim or upholstery tacks, hinged together, voila instant 3 door screen w/displaying capability.

Some art-upcycled pieces I made:
1. The Gothic Victorian Bracelet:Gothic Victorian Bracelet! 2A hand beaded and sequin fabric cuff bracelet I made and extra embellished with a vintage pin.
2. Priscilla's Garden Bracelet:Priscillas Garden Bracelet! 5A bracelet with vintage and modern pieces.
3. The Money Talismen Bracelet:Money Talismen Bracelet!A bracelet to bring the wearer good fortune and luck. I love this one, we could use fortune and luck in our lives don't you agree?
