Under the Boardwalk, Altered Book Project

Here is a great altered book project I created, perfect for using vintage ephemera. images, mixed with modern day papers, inks, found objects and recycled items.

Under the Boardwalk was inspired by the history of boardwalk communities by the shore. It was inspired by my adventures to the Jersey Shore particularly Ocean Grove, Asbury Park, Seaside, and LBI. Vintage beauty pageants, and Victorian Seaside Splendor. By 1950's amusements and confections, candy apples, calliope music and summer nights.

If you love to recycle and use recycled items in your works, this is a great way to do that.

To make your own follow these instructions below: 

Materials:

• Sails and Shells Paper Pack, Canvas Corp.
• Seashore style ephemera, and vintage images, Lisa Kettell Designs
• Vintage or modern bingo cards,and wood bingo tokens Lisa Kettell Designs
• Chipboard style card stock, Canvas Corp.
• Basic office folders
• Paper Straws, Recollections Line, Michaels Stores
• Vintage style embellishments, 7 Gypsies
• Inks, Tattered Angels
• Found Objects: broken glass bottles, wood shapes, branches, cake balloons.
• Other: crepe paper, German glass glitter, tiny star fish, shells, muslin fabric, ribbon.cocktail honey combs stirrers,color clothes pins
• Tools/Glue: hot glue, hot glue gun, glue stick scissors, small paper hole punch, white floral wire

Directions:

1. Cut 2 pieces of the chipboard style card stock to 8 by 10 inches for the cover. Then cut out 4 pieces of basic office folders and 4 pieces of chipboard style card stock about 5 by 7 inches, for the interior pages,
2. Begin layering the cut interior pages with scrapbook paper from the Sails and Shells paper pack, Glue in place with glue stick.
3. Assemble all the pages together and punch 1 hole into the pages with a hole punch about 2 inches in from the top and another hole 2 inches from the bottom. Make sure you punch the holes 1 inch from the side. ( the side I'm referring to is the area where the book pages will have its binding.)
4. Thread each whole with white floral wire and twist around 3 small branches. This is your binding.
5. Start decorating the top cover with bingo board, scrapbook embellishments, paper straws, found objects, images, additional scrapbook paper cutouts,
6. Cut various strips of scrapbook paper from the Sails and Shells paper pack and cut fringe into them, then hot glue to the cover sides and interior sides,
7. Age ribbon, scrapbook paper and objects with inks from Tattered Angels.
8. Finally add the remaining embellishments: honey comb stirrers, ribbons, clothes pins and bingo tokens.

Tips/Tricks:

• Use old book covers or bingo boards instead of basic office folders or chipboard paper.
• Layer the whole cover with paper straws.
• Create these books with your kids or family on a rainy summer day.
• Turn this book project into a family vacation heirloom.
• Make a theme book. Example: fairies and pixies, flowerland, candyland, wizards, Santa Claus, etc.

Here's a Lisa Kettell Designs Team project

that has everything you need to help you believe!

Supplies

• Cigar box or book shaped box (available at craft and hobby stores)
• 2 Baby Bailey unpainted dolls
• Fairy silhouette
• wooden scrolls/trim
• alphabet stickers
• England stickers*
• gold glitter washi tape
• purple ribbon
• treasure map
• hot glue gun, glue sticks
• white glue
• glitter in gold & pink
• craft wire
• green scrapbook paper
• acrylic pant: white, peach, orange, gold, pink, red, light green, dark green, dark blue, brown, black

Directions

1. Paint baby bailey dolls to look like Wendy and Peter. Then hot glue purple ribbon to top           of her head, add pink glitter to top of her ankles.
2. Next fold a small amount of green paper to resemble a hat for peter, hot glue to his head       poke craft wire into back of dolls, set aside.
3. Paint the wooden trim gold and add glitter. Paint inside of box dark blue and add white to create clouds.
4. Position Big Ben sticker in front of the clouds, or, paint him on. Then glue green paper to       lid of box, paint outside of box gold. 
5. Open box add washi tape across the top and hot glue wooden trim to frame inside of box.     add stickers and silhouette to box lid to create the cover.
6. Put a small amount of hot glue on tips of the wire attached to the dolls and position them         to look like they're flying. 
7. Add treasure map to inside lid and dry brush gold paint on corners of cover and the map.

Hope this was fun...I've been outside most of this week adding arches and making a bed out of

bent wood and an iron cot! When it's ready it'll be covered in vines and flowers. -Marfi Bradford

Spring Birds Canvas Project

Yesterday I sat out in the tiny "backyard"of my gypsy wagon and

created a little project using some of

my awesome Lisa Kettell products.

It's simple and it's a little tribute

 to this beautiful season.

Supplies

unfinished china doll head  

6x6 canvas

paper mache bird box

hot glue gun/glue sticks

acrylic paints: black, navy blue, medium blue, dark pink, light pink, orange, peach

oil pastels:dark brown, green, light pink, fuchsia, peach

red lace trim

Directions

1. Paint canvas dark blue

add a bit of light blue for interest.

using the oil pastels, draw branches and flowers

2. Paint china doll head peach, add facial details and hair color

cut the top part of the bird off

paint dark pink, orange and light pink.

3. Hot glue china doll head to bird body

add lace trim

hot glue to the canvas

paint feet on with light pink paint.

4. There's a lot of different things that can be done

with this one...

she could be a raven for Halloween, or a dove for Easter

her body can be covered over in sheet music

or she can placed in a little cage...

there's endless possibilities1

DT Project: Pink Pixie Fairy, Debra Famularo

Deb’s Pink Pixie Fairy Card

Materials:

• Lisa Kettell Designs Cupie Head
• ATC card backing
• Mini pink bottle brush tree
• Lisa’s Altered Art collage images
• Hello Dollie image by www.retrocafeart.com   
• Pink scalloped trim by Julie Collings
• Glitter, flower, rhinestones, pink craft wire, ink, pink sequin trim and adhesive.

Directions:

1.   Layer an ATC card backing ephemera of choice, and a collage image of a cupie doll, secure in place with adhesive.

2.   Attach a cupie head from Lisa Kettell Designs to top center of the cupie doll image on the ATC card.

3.   Add dimension to ATC with ink of choice.

4.   Embellish with scalloped trim, bottle brush tree, sequins, rhinestones, flower, craft wire and glitter.

This is such a fun project to create for any occasion, holiday or for a gift. ATC's are great trading projects as well.

    

    Bottle brush trees work for some many projects. Valentine's Day is coming up, this would make a great Valentine card or use in a party banner. Instead of a rectangular background shape, use a heart shape.

Baby Bailey Treasure Box....with Tutorial!

This pretty little altered box was made using a simple wooden box and a Lisa Kettell Designs  'Baby Bailey' style molded doll. I love these little molded dolls!

Supplies:

Baby Bailey Molded Doll 3 inch
Small wooden hinged box with lid
Fabric flowers and leaves
Tacky Glue
Decoupage glaze
Acrylic Paint
Decorative napkins
Gold Rub n Buff
Distress Ink
Glitter


Directions:

1. Glue Baby Bailey to the top of your box using Tacky Glue and let dry. The box I used had a little inset in the top which was perfect for placing my little doll.
2. Paint the inside of your box with acrylic paints, let dry.
3. Collage a pretty paper napkin (separated from it's white base layer) onto the outside of the box (avoid covering the hardware) using matte medium and then paint to add more color if you wish.
4. Glue small fabric flowers around your Baby Bailey, add leaves and other small floral accents until you like how it looks.
5. Glue a word or other embellishment on to Baby Bailey's tummy if would like.
6. Apply a thin coat of decoupage glaze to Baby Bailey and the flowers, being sure to coat them evenly. Add more thin coats as needed until you are happy with how it looks.
7. When the last coat on the top is completely dry, add a thin coat to the rest of the box if you wish.
8. When all is dry, use distress ink to age and add dimension.
9. Use gold Rub n Buff on the edges of the box and on the hardware.
10. Add glitter if you wish and then let it all dry.

Sneak Peak Inside the Studio
Come join me for a sneak peak into my studio, where all my fave things can be found! Its always evolving with recycled shelving, color and my fave circus, storybook, kitsch and steampunk themes! Most of the furniture in the studio has been recycled or salvaged from destruction, even curb side pick up, keeping the decor of the studio and the whole store on a decorating budget is extremely important, especially in this economy!
Some of my shelves are filled with my own artwork, book samples, swap artworks, gifts, customer/friend handmade items, thrift store finds, purchases from my travels and my life long collecting!Everyone knows I love vintage dolls: kewpies, cupies, charlottes, storybook animals, etc. so when I receive one or buy one, I can't wait to show it off in the studio, lol!I especially love circus memorabilia, these tin cans came from two different locations both were ironically $2.00 each and hold some of my bits and pieces!My studio is located on a former stage, as my store was a playhouse/theatre at the Turn of the Century, this adds to the magic of my studio space not to mention the history of it!

Altered Composition Book

No matter where you go, you gaze eyes upon composition books, they are so cheap and in-expensive to buy, but let's face it, these diamonds in the rough need a facelift. A while back at CHA I assisted Beacon Adhesives on a project that Mike was teaching to a group which was altered composition books, using scrapbook paper, zip dry and flowers. I never finished mine, after a few months, I picked up my unfinished project and this is the result, a frou frou altered composition book with Dresden scraps, crepe paper, millinery and flowers.

Materials
-Composition book
-Scrapbook paper
-Scrapbook tags, labels
-Dresden scraps or vintage images
-Millinery and paper flowers
-Chipboard lettering
-Crepe paper
-Ribbon and trims
-Glues: zip dry, kids choice, liquid laminate, decaupage medium
-Tools: scissors
-Clear glitter, green flocking 

Directions
1. Coat one side of composition book w/zip dry, place scrapbook paper onto it and push to secure, then coat the spine and other side of the composition book with more zip dry and scrapbook paper.
2. Attach ribbons to the borders of the composition book leaving about 12 inches on each end in order to tie a bow.
3. Pleat 3 yards of crepe paper streamers, fold in half and twirl into a circle shape, glue in place with kids choice glue.
4. Apply decaupage medium to millinery flower leaves, sprinkle green flocking onto it, let dry.
5. Begin layering your composition book with Dresden scraps and images, trims, ribbons and millinery.
6. Apply liquid laminate to the images, let dry, apply more to the crepe paper and sprinkle clear glitter onto it.





Now you are ready to begin writing inside your composition book, perhaps write down your bucket list, your craft ideas, your thoughts or your dreams.

I made this little altered notebook using one of my favorite images from the Seaside CD by Lisa Kettell Designs!  Here's a quick little tutorial on how to make your own....

4x6 Composition Book with soft cover
Glue Stick
Glitter Glue
Rhinestones
Tissue Tape
Chalk Inks
Rubber Stamp
Spray Finish
Rayon Ribbon
Asstd Buttons

1. Pick your fav image from the Seaside CD and print it out to match the size of your notebook. In my example, my notebook measures 4x6 inches.
2. Glue the image to your front cover and let glue dry completely. I used a gluestick for mine because it dries quickly.
3. Embellish your image with glitter glue and rhinestones. I typically use flatter embellishments for my little notebooks so they are easy to carry.
4. Use tissue tape (Tim Holtz is used in this example) around the edge of the notebook. It gives a nice clean finish if folded over the edge.
5. Accent edge with chalk inks in desired color.
6. Stamp your message on image. I used Inkadinkado stamp for this project.
7. When all is dry, spray your cover with a clear finish. I used Krylon Low Odor Clear Finish in Matte because I like the soft vintage feel but you could also use a gloss if you prefer.
8. Wrap dyed rayon ribbon around edge of cover, tie at bottom, add fun buttons or charms if desired.

Baby Bailey Baby Buggy Bumpers

Baby Bailey Baby Buggy Bumpers

Do you remember your first doll? Your favorite doll? Well, designer Lisa Kettell liked her childhood doll so much that it served as a model for the handmade, foam clay dollhead pieces she sells under the name Baby Bailey. I received one in my first design team kit, and I knew I had to make something with it.

If you know me, you know I like vintage ephemera. You probably also know that I'm somewhat intuitive. That is, one item suggests another, and another item suggests the next, and so on. So when I laid my hands on Baby Bailey, he told a story of a boy's childhood. I imagined a boy coming home from school, ditching his school work, and spending his time playing in his room or outside. Maybe he played cowboys and indians. Maybe rode an imaginary horse around the living room or yard.

I decided to make a wall hanging that such a boy might like. For my surface, I used the back cover of a vintage photo album. I then adhered a piece of Lisa Kittell's scrapbook paper. The paper has a worn leather look to it, and the script alphabet conjures practicing cursive. This led me to add a small square of brown lined paper, a wooden ruler, a piece of old book cover and its inside binding.

I looked through my stash to see what other sorts of doo-dads might suggest a boy's playthings, and I found an old broken metal horse. I adhered the horse with E6000. The horse suggested a western theme, so I looked through my old sheet music collection until I found "Night Herding Song," a cowboy's lull-a-bye. Keeping with the western theme, I added a chipboard star, to which I added a little bit of thread for the sake of authenticity.

While I knew that I wanted to work with Baby Bailey, it took me awhile to figure out how to make him stand out on my surface, which is a little more than a foot long. I painted an oval cardboard frame with Ranger crackle paint in copper. Behind the frame, I laid down a bit of tan scrapbook paper. Finally, I mounted Baby Bailey inside the frame and topped the frame with a watch face.

As finishing touches, I added big black snaps to the bottom of the wall hanging with E6000. Finally, I added the stencil B and the number 5, just to play on the primary school theme.
