7 Days of Magic: Spell-a-la-palooza, Day Four

Day Four of Spellbinding Tales:

We are all moving on to day/night four of Spellapalooza which has been filled with transformation potions, secret hideaways, magical gardens coming to life and a scavenger hunt, all to celebrate this years Halloween Festivities. Last night was called "Pippa's Surprise Scavenger Hunt, where we were given special maps and clues in order to locate the grand prize of the hunt. 

The hardest part of the hunt last night was the Maze at Maiden's Path, where secret doors and labyrinths took you on spiral turns and down hidden corridors, which had dead ends. Pepper Longley and Gabriel Beekman both got lost in the Maze, and were finally found.

My partner and I, carefully read the clues, stayed on the appointed paths and did not let our curiosity lead us off the guided paths like some of the others had done. Eventually we found our way out and headed for Windbreakers Hill for the final clue of the night, which involved two star tokens that we gave to Durkin Lars, who was the officially appointed token keeper of the hunt. Durkin led us to the Gates of Percy, where a gilded Phoenix was waiting to fly us back to Pippa's for the final hunt count.

I'm happy to say that my partner and I came in first place and won the grand prize which were two tickets to the Tri-Wizard World Soccer Tournament in November, where national leagues compete for the World Cup. The tickets also included Turret stand box seats, free food and spirits, such an amazing evening filled with exhilarating challenges and feats.

Tonight will not be as extensive, for we are learning to ride Unicorns and Pegasus at The Tornelius School of Uni-questrian Magic on the grounds of Waverly Stables. This event is labeled as "Unicorn's Flight School", in the itinerary guide.  

At the stables we will be appointed a Unicorn and a Pegasus for the nights events. Then learn the basics of riding and flying. How to hide our furry friends and how to harness the unicorns horn for protection during an emergency in case our wands power isn't enough. Unicorns are the most powerful of the magic creatures. Their horns are of the purest magic and the most sought after by dark wizards. Their protection and existence is important to the magical world.

Pegasus are the guardians of their unicorn friends and often scout areas first, before their unicorn friends venture to the area, shielding them with their wings which turn into armor shields during a battle for protection or help.

The Tornelius School is one of the oldest in the land and takes pride on their training and culture of their creatures. Founding Father Tornelius Bromwick acquired this land via a magic treaty between his non magic world friend Professor Theodore Tuckerton who bestowed part of his land in Waverly to Tornelius who he met in Wizard School when they were boys. Theodore, decided to live in the non magic world, protecting all magic world portals from dark forces and danger.

I'm not sure what the night holds, but each of us are all excited for it. Wendy Bellows, Pippa and Myself baked almond crescent cookies and coconut date bars for snacks tonight. I already had a few cookies, hehehe, soooo good.

Day Three of Spellbinding Tales:

Every year when the 12th day before Halloween arrives, Pippa Bellows hosts a series of magical events at her home in Waverly Hollow. She transforms her whole barn into a glowing pumpkin where magical carved beets, turnips and gourds hang from every nook and cranny. 

As you know last two nights were filled with transformation potions, secret hideaways, magical gardens coming to life and herb guides, all to celebrate this years Halloween Festivities. Night five was called Potionology 101and night six was Cauldron's Run.

During last nights festivities I met flower and herb guides, Violet Brumme was my favorite, her hair was just so beautiful and her voice filled with love. She shared her rarest purple plant spell and the best way to care for our flower friends during the year.

At 11:30pm we were greeted by the forest guide herself, she is Queen of the forest and works closely with Titania the Fairy Queen to help protect all the creatures of nature and the outdoors. She helped host the nights star shower. Pixies from all over the land aided in the magic shower that illuminated the night sky and called on every star in the universe for their glow and power.

Tonight we are all getting ready for the next event:"Pippa's Surprise Scavenger Hunt". Tonight all guest receive a scavenger hunt map which is hiding magical gifts in a variety of places. Some can be visible to the eye, others must be unlocked through special spells. Each person gets a map and 4 hours to complete it, in order to locate all the hidden clues, which lead to the grand prize.

We will each draw a star seed out of the magic pumpkin which will have a etched symbol on it. There are two of the same symbols in the magic pumpkin, the two matching symbol holders will be partners in the scavenger hunt. I drew the crescent moon symbol and so did Iris Crane, who will be my partner in completing the scavenger hunt tonight.

This map of clues looks so hard, glad there is two of us to try and solve it. Before heading out we will each receive a distress amulet, in case we find ourselves in trouble. Xavier Holdwright created the map, he is the Great Great Great Grandson of Marcus Holdwright, creator of Holdwright Maps and Explorative Games. He will be handing out the maps and our first clues complete in his Spider Fairy Cloak. The maps are secured in a lock and carry trunk.

Well I am off to Waverly Hall at the crest of the Conservatory to begin the hunt and festivities.
This is all I know of for now. I can only share some of the highlights from this point, I'll have more to share tomorrow! Wish us luck in completing the scavenger hunt.

Day Two of Spellbinding Tales:

Every year when the 12th day before Halloween arrives, Pippa Bellows hosts a series of magical events at her home in Waverly Hollow. She transforms her whole barn into a glowing pumpkin where magical carved beets, turnips and gourds hang from every nook and cranny. 

As you know last night was night five of the Halloween festivities. Night five was called Potionology 101 which was taught by Professor Conrad Wiltstone, leading potion-ologist, and two time winner of the Wortley Wimbatt Award. In the workshop I created all the essential potions needed in every wizards magic box, and got to experiment with rare herbs and spells. I excelled at the Wimworm Primworm Transformation Spell. I tweaked it with some of my secret ingredients and was able to perfect it. 

By the end of the workshop each of the students created their own secret hideaways and potions, learned how to transform ourselves and how to keep our secret hideaway jars invisible from others. Such an amazing experience. 

Tonight is night six of magic and we are getting ready for the next event: "Cauldrons Run", which is the night when the rarest herbs and flowers come alive and share their yearly secrets for a better harvest and town folklore that may actually be true. These herbs and flowers then cast a spell for blessings until they come back again next year, so cool.

One of the herbs; "Violets Brumme" has already come to life, she is an early bloomer with the sweetest smell and personality. Her hair is a enchanting violet color, with hints of shimmering blue, that glows when the moonlight beams onto it.

Pippa and Violet have led us all to the edge of the woods, where Cornelius Primnott, Conrad Wiltstone, Snap Ravenwood, Lionel Grimshaw and Tinker Gazergreen are awaiting our arrival so the evening festivities can truly begin.

 

At the edge of the woods sits Wiltmoore Bridge, located behind Waverly Conservatory where our Wizard Guides are waiting. They have set up a long table with spell books, garden boxes, candles, lanterns and merriwig elixir. We have been told to bring along our wands, brooms and 2 empty potion jars. 

Then I've been told when the clock strikes 10pm, the transformation of the herbs begin. Pixies from all over the land aid in the magic shower that will illuminate the night sky and call on every star in the universe.

This is all I know for now, can't wait to share tonight's adventure with all of you tomorrow!. The pictures I shared are part of tonight's adventure. Notice the herbs and flowers coming to life in the photo above. That flower is named Luna, her sisters shown next to her are; Mina, Petunia and Seenie.

The Folklore and Magic of Owls:

Africa

Among the Kikuyu of Kenya it was believed that owls were harbingers of death. If one saw an owl or heard its hoot, someone was going to die. In general, owls are viewed as harbingers of bad luck, ill health, or death. The belief is widespread even today.

The Americas

In the culture of the Uto-Aztec tribe, the Hopi, taboos surround owls, which are associated with sorcery and other evils. The Aztecs and Maya, along with other Natives of Mesoamerica, considered the owl a symbol of death and destruction. In fact, the Aztec god of death, Mictlantecuhtli, was often depicted with owls. There is an old saying in Mexico that is still in use^[15]: Cuando el tecolote canta, el indio muere ("When the owl cries/sings, the Indian dies"). The Popol Vuh, a Mayan religious text, describes owls as messengers of Xibalba (the Mayan "Place of Fright"). The belief that owls are messengers and harbingers of the dark powers is also found among the Hočągara (Winnebago) of Wisconsin.When in earlier days the Hočągara committed the sin of killing enemies while they were within the sanctuary of the chief's lodge, an owl appeared and spoke to them in the voice of a human, saying, "From now on the Hočągara will have no luck." This marked the beginning of the decline of their tribe. An owl appeared to Glory of the Morning, the only female chief of the Hočąk nation, and uttered her name. Soon afterwards she died. People often allude to the reputation of owls as bearers of supernatural danger when they tell misbehaving children, "the owls will get you."

Middle East

In Arab culture, owls are seen as bad omens.

Western culture

The modern West generally associates owls with wisdom. This link goes back at least as far as Ancient Greece, where Athens, noted for art and scholarship, and Athena, Athens' patron goddess and the goddess of wisdom, had the owl as a symbol. Marija Gimbutas traces veneration of the owl as a goddess, among other birds, to the culture of Old Europe, long pre-dating Indo-European cultures.

Owls were considered funerary birds among the Romans.

Use as rodent control

Encouraging natural predators to control rodent population is a natural form of pest control, along with excluding food sources for rodents. Placing a new box for owls on a property can help control rodent populations (one family of hungry barn owls can consume more than 3,000 rodents in a nesting season) while maintaining the naturally balanced food chain.

The Purple and Gold Art Challenge!
You can find inspiration everywhere and at any time. My art challenge to you is create something using only purples, golds and very little cream for glowing effects and perhaps some hints of blue or bits of black. But keep the main colors as purple!

Here is an atc I made called: Get Your Magic Beans using a violet purple as the main dress color and deep eggplant purple for the top hat, with hints of blues, blacks and creams for the rest of the atc. I actually took a pencil and drew around the dress, then colored in with prismacolor oil pencils and a bit of acrylic paints, did the same technique for the whole card, including the background and the checkered floor.

The Story of this ATC:
Ashley took a job this summer as The Magic Beans Box girl, after 2 days into it, she is frustrated, especially today, for Ashley will be missing out on the Mer-Tail contest and Sundae fest at the Beach. But what's more important saving up for a new Wimble Pix Stix with extra dust or a contest?

Here is another atc I made called: The Spider Wizard!
This atc was made using sturdy water color paper from Daler-Rowney Watercolor paper and inks, Strathmore Bristol board, Prismacolor oil pencils, drawing pencil, vintage images and lettering.

I inked the background of the water color paper using various blue and purple inks and water using a brush and brayer. I drew my spider image onto the bristol board with mechanical pencil, colored in with prismacolor pencils and more inks. I cut out and glued to inked watercolor paper. Then I double layered the vintage head image onto watercolor paper using modge podge, cut out and glued to top of the spider image. Now Finish with more vintage images, paper lettering, watercolor inked hat, distressing inks from Ranger Ink and glitters.

This ATC Story:
Meet Starla, the spider wizard from Peeksville, whose special talent is transformation. Starla can transform into anything at anytime. Today she has transformed into a spider, because she needed more hands to finish a detailed spell for an important client from SleepyWillow!

I will make a new piece with this challenge as well, can't wait to see what you come up with!

"The Universe is filled with Magic!"
Many close to me have often heard me say: "The Universe is filled with magical things, all you have to do is believe!" This concept is part of the basis of how I feel and see things.

There is just so much magic out there, from the first blooms of spring, the sounds of a summer surf at the seashore, the smell of cotton candy and funnel cakes on the boardwalk or at a carnival, the view from the top of a ferris wheel, the birth of a child or furry companion, a glowing sunset or glowing full moon, these things can all spark the magic we feel inside.

I get questions all the time asking me: "What motivates you?","What inspires you?" or "Where do you get your imagination from?" These questions can simply be answered from deep within. I know that is hard to believe, "How do you get that from within?"
The world inside my head is like a galaxy in space, where each star can represent one of my many un-tapped wishes, waiting for me to call upon and have answered. Where planets represent my different imaginary worlds, waiting to come alive.

Several years ago I began to cut out the fog surrounding my life, the dis-belief, the negative energy (from people and things), the heavy weight I allowed to manifest from all the years that I entertained negativity, self-doubt, disbelief, and the lack of confidence. Loosing that excess weight wasn't easy to do, but I had to do it, in order to get back in touch with who I was and allow myself to grow as a person, achieving the things I wanted in this world.

For the longest time, I lost my imagination, and was trying to get it back. My imagination is the key to my creative life. Once I let the nay-sayers go, and started to tune out the negative waves from others, I began to get my imagination back, slowly developing my artistic side once again with my artful muse which takes over when I create, allowing me to believe in myself again.

I offer some workshops called: The Artful Imagination/The Artful Spirit and Expressive Illustration, these classes share a similar bond, with exercises to channel your artistic side, bringing you on the path or artful enlightenment and allowing you to begin the belief that the universe is filled with magical things. Each of these classes require you to bring a sketch book style journal for various art workouts, and help you to develope your artful nitch tapping on what's inside you. Depending on the class, students will either create mixed media journals which represent their artistic selves, in others, the student will create a mixed media painting of themselves using liquid canvas and learning a variety of collage and illustrative techniques.
Some things I recommend:
1.I strongly urge one to let criticism roll off your back, if someone can take time to write things about you whether it be 3 words or 3 paragraphs, then they have interest in you, they took time to criticize you, take it as a compliment, that you consumed their moment with your world.
2.I recommend that before you start creating artwork, whether new mediums or for the first time, that you create for yourself first, appreciate it, analyze it, cradle it, understand it and believe in it. When you believe in yourself, others will believe in you.
3.Don't hold back when drawing, and don't erase what you just drew, you can learn from it, add to it and create more from it, Accidents are: "Serendipity" and become the best masterpieces.
4.Work out of your comfort zone. If you love pinks and creams, work with aquas and creams, slowly working through the pastel color palette. Next work with pastels and darks like pink and black, lilac and brown, move into a mix pink, cream, brown and black. Start working with colors that normally don't work: orange, blue and purple, or orange, pink and aqua. Now you are slowly breaking out of your comfort zones, playing with colors and finding new ones you never thought to work with. This can lead to a world of endless posibilities. The same can be said for papers and patterns.
5.If you know how to knit, crochette and quilt, but want to start collage and work with paints, do it. You are already creating magical masterpieces for all to enjoy, why not break out into another world, you will learn so much and discover new things, challenging and evolving your artistic self.
6. Never ever think you know it all, well because you don't! We learn every second of the day, experiencing new things, places and smells which can lead to inspiration. Today I read an excerp from a friends book which will fuel my day, I learned others share my beliefs and my cats can dream like us. Everyday I try something new like a new paint brush, new project, new coffee, revisit a forgotton shirt turning it into something new with different accessories. I recommend you buy a cheapie calender and turn it into an art calender, randomly writing down different things you want to try on it and do it the day you wrote it down.
Example:
Sunday: Try Buckwheat Pancakes
Monday: Learn a sentence in French: Un Bonne Vin Blanc ( A Good White Wine)
Tuesday: Draw a lioness while wearing a crown, and be Queen of your artful jungle.
Wednesday: Don't collage with Marie Antoinette, read a chapter about her, then collage with her, you might learn something more.
Thursday: Eat Fresh Coconut, save the shell and make a project, now you have contributed to your inner "Green".
Friday: Treat yourself to an ice cream sundae and sing along to the Nutcracker.
Saturday: Wear a pink shirt, for breast cancer awareness and feel good about supporting it, create with pink all day as a tribute.
Now start the next week with something with 7 days of something new. Like roasting peanuts in the oven and envision a day at the circus, Wear a cute dress with a cardigan and loads of pearls feel like a spring princess. Go on a date with your mate to the movies or to the book store and share ideas. Go to the beach after a storm, and search for unusual shells, bring home and turn into a project or place into a memory jar. Light a Sugar cookie candle conjur up a new cookie recipe. Go to the museum and see what speaks to you. The possibilities are endless, and soon you will see your inspiration soar, finding out even more about yourself and your new likes and dislikes. ARE YOU READY TO CREATE SOMETHING NEW YET?

A Yearbook of Halloween 2007-2008

Many of you know, and if you don't you will now, Halloween is one of my fave time of year, next to my Birthday (LOL) and Christmas. But the reason Halloween is extra special to me is that its also the day my Grandmom was born, her birthday, two fave things in one. She was my other best friend next to my mom, when my Grandma Yolanda passed away in 1998 it was a devastation for me, til this day I have still not fully got over that, she was a second mother to me, both my Grandmom and Grandpa lived with us, when she died we all felt the loss. I eventually bought a plaque at her favorite shrine: St.Joseph's in Stirling, NJ to remember her by, she loved that place, and so do I. My Grandfather and Mother, along with myself take rides over there to see the plaque and connect with her, we just were all there a month ago, it was a happy time.

Today I wish her a Happy Birthday and call upon her to bring me love, luck and Happiness today and always! Another thing about my Grandmother and my Uncle Jimmy, they were the 2 other artists in the family, I believe they passed that on to me. They are my artful idols and like me loved this time of year.

In the next few pictures are an adventure: Tiffany, Ed, Glenny and I made to a local farm in Chester a few weeks back to go apple and pumpkin picking. Isn't this farm beautiful? Just acres and acres of land waiting for you to discover, after all NJ is the Garden State, believe it or not!


Tiffany and I with our massive apples, Tiffany is the best we met years ago at my fave place: The Book Store and have been friends ever since. Here I am in the pumpkin patch, thanks Ed for taking the picture.



Glenny and me in one of the apple tree rows, Glenny is used to the camera now, I take loads of pictures, poor guy, now he just grins and bares it! LOL! Notice this apple tree, don't they look like giant cherries, and that sky was a perefect blue, such a serene picture, I had to take it.

This picture is one I took at Donaldson's Farm in Hackettstown, near my home, such a cute farm and loads of pumpkins and a hayride.

Some more pictures at Donaldson's, of me sitting down in the pumpkin display and my mom behind one of the pumpkin cutouts! We had a blast. These pictures were taken last Halloween time, right on Halloween too!


The next set of picturesque scenery is taken behind Our(Glenny and Me)House, we took a nice Autumn drive along the back road of our house to nab some pictures of the Autumn scenery!


In these pictures, Glenny and I went Pumpkin picking down the road from our house to Tranquillity Farms to hand out at the petting zoo with our new animal friends and the little Goat who wanted to actually leave with us. Isn't this little goat too cute?



Then we went on our pumpkin mission, scooping out the best pumpkins we could find, I detoured over to these cool white pumpkins, they just looked so vintage chic as if painted that color by a vintage artist.

Some primitive looking sunflowers, almost resembled a sunflower grave yard, kinda of eerie but pretty at the same time.
In the next pictures, I dropped down into the autumn flower patch for a fairy style picture, I just should add some wings and a crown, minus the cap.
Talk about the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, this says it all!










I had to photoshop some of the Donaldson's pictures, I couldn't resist, could you?




These pumpkins were the ones Glenny and I finally bought and carved on Hallows Eve, His is the tree pumpkin and mine is the Sally from Nightmare Before Xmas Pumpkin, took us over an hour to do our pumpkins. The next is a picture of Chris, Jess (my future niece and nephew) in there too cute for words costumes, I glitzed up a bit with a tiny crown, I've had it since I was 7years old. This year Chris is a Sumo Wrestler and Jess a Bee Fairy, Here is my Halloween Costume last year, my altered Queen Costume, The fabric crown is embellished with my vintage buckle necklace and the costume itself loads of pearls and jewels..This year Im dressing as a gothic Marie Antoinette!
